Nature of Trust Launch

What would it look like to move resources in ways that build trust while redistributing power?

Over the past 18 months, we have participated in a cohort with other health equity leaders, organized by Biomimicry for Social Innovation, focused on the development and real-world testing of the Nature of Trust framework. Our role has been to apply the framework to local community-led initiatives and to health systems exploring co-design, shared decision-making, and community-governed investment strategies. The insights help point us toward opportunities to deepen authentic, trust-based relationships between health systems and community leaders, ultimately to shape more equitable resource flows and health outcomes.

Nature of Trust draws on biomimicry, gaining insights from living systems to understand how trust forms and functions. If you are new to biomimicry, we encourage you to explore the framework and other videos on the site. The framework offers practical domains such as willingness, honest signals, cooperation, discovery, and feedback loops, helping leaders examine where trust is strong, where it might be strengthened, and what conditions allow it to deepen. In our work, we reflect on how these insights translate into healthcare settings, particularly when institutions are stewarding significant capital and decision-making authority.

For healthcare leaders working to advance participatory investing, the specific, actionable tools offer more than a theoretical framework. They provide a lens to design transparent processes, clarify decision boundaries, send credible signals of shared power, and build feedback mechanisms that allow community partners to shape and govern resource allocation over time. When paired with Shift’s participatory investing tools, Nature of Trust becomes a guide for moving capital in community-governed ways while strengthening the relationships that make better outcomes possible.

We invite you to explore the Nature of Trust resources, watch the companion video of our team exploring how we activate the principles in the health sector, and consider how you might apply willingness, honest signals, and feedback loops in your next funding decision. Trust is not separate from investment strategy, it is the strategy and the infrastructure to enable long-term health equity outcomes.
